Dog sledding on Vancouver Island
The back door opens, and all you see is eager little husky faces staring back at you. They start barking in excitement, as one by one they are led out to get harnessed. They truly are great dogs, so well behaved and beautiful. We help them get harnessed, and two by two, they are brought over to sled. I grip my feet deep onto the sled brake as I feel the snow crunch below it…trying to make myself heavier than I am. Paul’s upfront holding the two lead dogs. When all ten are all set, Paul and I jump in the sled, and Daryl has them off…
What an incredible experience. Who would have thought these dogs have so much power? Whizzing through the backcountry of Vancouver Island…breathtaking. As we go through the forest there are some low branches, where we do our best to protect our faces and cameras as we whip past the next corner.
Daryl even let us have a go at mushing. Paul had it under control. Then it was my turn… next I remember was a Steph-sized print in the snow, as the “emergency brake” was pulled – Daryl tackling me and tipping the sled on its side. We escaped the incident with nothing short of loads of laughter…Before we knew it, we had a sip of Fireball, a Canadian Cinnamon whisky and the trip was over. It went by too fast!
Daryl, thanks for an incredible day! We hope we can take some Wild Adventurers to you soon!
